Affinity has launched a major update to its creative software, now offering a single app that is free for everyone on Windows and Mac. An iPad version is coming soon. This new platform replaces Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher.
There is no subscription and no one-time payment. Canva, which owns Affinity, says the core app will remain free without restrictions. You can download it now at affinity.studio.
What’s New
The new Affinity app merges the tools and features of its three apps into one unified interface. You no longer need to switch between apps for different tasks. It supports vector work, image editing, and complex page layouts in one project file.
Key updates include:
- Professional-grade, non-destructive editing that matches the quality of previous Affinity tools.
- Native Canva integration, allowing you to export projects directly to your Canva account.
- Access to AI-powered tools for Canva Premium users within the Affinity environment.
- Immediate availability for Mac and Windows users.
- Legacy Affinity apps removed from sale and discontinued for future updates.
Affinity says that this new version is “free forever,” although some creators are wary that crucial tools may require a subscription in the future. The company is making this change after being purchased by Canva, which offers many free features but also requires a subscription for many tools.
Why It’s Free
The move is the result of Canva acquiring Affinity. Canva has the financial power and user base to support this model. They goal is likely to draw creative professionals into Canva’s paid ecosystem.
Canva’s revenue model relies on its paid services: Canva Pro and Canva for Team. By making Affinity free, Canva removes the upfront cost barrier and attracts designers who may later upgrade to its paid offerings.
This freemium strategy offers everyone access, while professionals and organizations pay for enhanced tools and features.
Competing with Adobe
Canva likely also wants to take users from Adobe. Offering a full creative suite for free directly challenges Adobe’s expensive subscription model. Affinity’s new app delivers many of the same capabilities as Creative Cloud without monthly fees.
This approach targets two groups:
- Professionals frustrated by Adobe’s costs.
- New designers who want pro-level tools without financial barriers.
However, Adobe offers many video editing tools that aren't available in Affinity and Canva, so many Adobe users will remain dependent on the Creative Cloud.
Should You Keep Your Old Affinity Apps?
If you bought Affinity V2 or earlier, you will still be able to use them. They’ll remain functional but won’t receive updates. There are a few reasons you might keep them:
- Offline use: Legacy versions don’t need internet or account logins.
- Familiar workflows: Some users may prefer the old interface or plug-in setup.
- Privacy: The free app usually requires a Canva account, which may not suit all users.
However, the new Affinity app includes many of the same features and will be the focus for future updates.
What This Means for Creators
Canva and Affinity have removed a big barrier to professional design tools: cost. For freelancers, small teams, and students, it is a win.
Affinity now gives you high-performance tools for free. You can handle vector design, photo editing, and page layout without juggling multiple apps or subscriptions. However, some creators remain cautious, unsure whether all features will stay free long term. Also, some are understandly upset that software they bought just months ago will no longer be updated.
